At every routine dental visit, your dentist will examine the spaces between your teeth and gums to look for any signs of periodontal disease.
What Causes Gum Disease?
Gum disease begins when plaque—a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth—is not properly removed through brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits. The bacteria produce toxins that irritate and damage the gums. This infection develops just below the gum line, creating small pockets that separate the gums from the teeth.
Gum disease progresses in two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis.
- Gingivitis: In this early stage, the gums may become red, swollen, and prone to bleeding. If caught early, gingivitis is usually reversible with consistent brushing and flossing.
- Periodontitis: If gingivitis is left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis, a more severe condition where the gums and the bone supporting the teeth suffer permanent damage. This can cause teeth to loosen, fall out, or require extraction by a dentist.
