Routine Dental Care

The Academy of General Dentistry recommends checkups twice per year for people of all ages. At this frequency, most problems can be caught early and are also the easiest to remedy.

What to Expect at Your Exam

We know what it’s like to be the patient, and that’s why you can count on our every effort to make you comfortable during your appointment, beginning at the moment when you walk through the door.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Medical history review: We will assess any new medical conditions or illnesses to determine the possible impact on your dental health.
  • Oral examination: We will check your mouth for cracked or decayed teeth.
  • Oral cancer screening: The face, neck, lips, tongue, throat and gums will be checked for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Gum disease evaluation: Gum and bone health will be checked and we will address any signs of periodontal disease.
  • Examination of existing restorations: Current fillings, crowns, and other restorations will be checked for proper functioning and any signs of wear and tear.

Digital X-Rays

Using the safest, most advanced dental technology is just as important to us as staying up-to-date on the latest treatment techniques. We’re dedicated to utilizing advanced, digital X-ray technology to save time, provide clearer dental photos, and protect patients by minimizing radiation exposure.

Oral Cancer Screening

We’re dedicated to more than your smile. We’re also committed to your overall wellness. Oral cancer can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early — that’s why we make screenings a priority during exams. Here at Your Total Dental and Orthodontics, we have the skills and tools to ensure that early signs and symptoms are identified. During the screening, our knowledgeable team will examine your entire oral cavity, as well as your face and throat to detect any abnormalities.

The most common symptoms of oral cancer include:

  • A lump, rough, or thickening spot
  • Red or white spots or sores anywhere in the oral cavity
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving the jaw or tongue
  • A sore that bleeds easily or does not heal
  • Pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on the lips

Dental Cleanings

Even when you carefully brush and floss at home on a regular basis, it is still difficult to ensure that your teeth stay 100% free of plaque and tartar. This is why it’s so important to visit our office for a professional cleaning every six months. Our dentists and hygienists will carefully clear your mouth of any plaque, polish your teeth to perfection, and floss thoroughly.

Disregarding your at-home and professional oral hygiene routine could result in periodontal disease, which can cause damage to your teeth, requiring additional intervention — and the worse it is, the higher the cost will be to address it. Preventative care is your best defense!
