What to Know About Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a protective restoration that covers a damaged or weakened tooth. At our office, we offer ceramic, porcelain, and same-day CEREC crowns made right here while you wait. Each crown is custom-designed to match your natural teeth for a seamless look. You may need a crown if your tooth is cracked, broken, or has a large filling that weakens its structure.
Why You Might Need Crowns?
Dental crowns are used to protect and restore teeth for many reasons. They can be placed on nearly any tooth in the mouth. Common reasons for needing a crown include:
- A tooth is cracked or broken
- A large filling is weakening the tooth
- After a root canal treatment
- To relieve severe sensitivity
- To replace an old or worn crown
How They Work?
Crowns are “cemented” onto an existing tooth and fully cover the portion above the gum line. The crown then essentially becomes your tooth's new outer surface. While there are many materials that crowns can be made of, most people favor having porcelain because it most closely resembles the color and translucency of natural teeth and is also quite strong.
Why They Matter?
Crowns or partial crowns, called onlays, are needed when there is insufficient tooth strength remaining to hold a filling. We will have a dental laboratory technician examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements in order to sculpt a crown from your distinct tooth impression, ensuring that it functions perfectly when placed. Crowns serve to not only restore your smile, but also to protect your mouth from further damage.
